Digital Printing

In 2003, digital camera sales should explode following a 35 percent increase in 2002. Here, Rick Sammon covers all the steps in the digital photographic process. Sammon begins with basic advice for those new to photography. Experienced film shooters should enjoy his ample coverage of Photoshop and digital image techniques. And in a bonus section, Sammon offers advanced tips such as taking glamour shots, producing e-books, and setting up a home studio. The book asks questions such as "How do I select a digital camera? How do I store my images? What are the first things I should do when using Photoshop?" Its approach of "learning to see and see to learn" uses pairs of images, software screen shots, and the best photographs from his own vast library. The 107 lessons take the reader through each topic in friendly, concise steps.

CMYK 2.0: A Cooperative Workflow for Photographers, Designers, and Printers

CMYK 2.0: A Cooperative Workflow for Photographers, Designers, and Printers
Rick McCleary (Author)
4.9 out of 5 stars(10)

24 Used! | New! from $43.50 (as of 02/28/2013 00:53 PST)

Digital Printing

Twenty years ago, achieving predictable CMYK color on press was a relatively straightforward process. All the partners in the process—photographers, designers, and printers—had clearly defined roles and responsibilities. With the introduction of Adobe Photoshop in 1990, the digital imaging revolution changed all that. Roles suddenly shifted and blurred. Standards disintegrated. The entire process quickly spiraled into a chaotic free-for-all that couldn’t help but leave everyone frustrated as they scratched their heads and wondered, “What’s wrong with my color?”

CMYK 2.0: A Cooperative Workflow for Photographers, Designers, and Printers
has one purpose: to get us all back on the same path to creating predictable color in the RGB-to-CMYK workflow. In a field that often features very strong—and very different—opinions, author Rick McCleary emphasizes the need for cooperation, collaboration, and communication. After first establishing a context for how we all got here, McCleary redefines each partner’s role in the process, demystifies the entire RGB-to-CMYK workflow, and offers a clear, step-by-step guide to achieving predictable color on press. Written with exceptional clarity, CMYK 2.0 presents a highly detailed and thoroughly rigorous approach to CMYK color, and it offers a workflow that all photographers, designers, and printers need—one that works.

The book's companion website provides a collaborative forum of growing resources and information on all things CMYK.

Digital Printing

"This is the magnum opus on digital printing and the book to read before color calibrating your monitor or wondering about differences in pigmented and dye-based inks. With little in the way of “how-to,” the book focuses more on why and showcases eloquent photographs, including a heartbreakingly beautiful portrait of Marilyn Monroe, a naked World War II bomber tail gunner, and the inevitable “Emperor’s New Clothes” work. Equally heartbreaking for far different reasons is Henry Wilhelm’s essay “A History of Permanence” that includes a section called “The Totally Lost Kodacolor Era” that will leave you stunned by the corporate callousness that’s described. This book not only deserves to be on the bookshelf of anybody who cares about photography, it deserves to be read."  -- Joe Farace, Shutterbug

Most of us know him as one member of the band Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young, but what you may not know is that at the same time Graham Nash was rocking the world, he was also pursuing a parallel career in photography and digital imaging. Nash Editions—the world’s premier fine-art digital printmaking studio, which Graham co-founded with R. Mac Holbert—represents the pinnacle of those efforts. This book uses thought-provoking essays and glorious artwork to sum up not only Nash Editions’ achievements but also the state of fine-art digital printmaking. After a brief history of printmaking, you’ll reach the heart of the book: an essay by Holbert on the genesis of Nash Editions and fine-art digital printing (which details the studio's interactions with major artists like David Hockney); an essay by MoMA consultant Henry Wilhelm (which includes a technical comparison of traditionally and digitally prepared prints); and commentary from Nash Editions artists. The book’s more than 100 illustrations include Nash Editions artwork, photos of artists in the studio, images of the machines used in digital printing, and illustrations of the proofing process.

Description #1 by Etsy - backthennishvintage:

Yeah..... so I love bold specs... I look for them in my everyday travels, and wonder if there are souls like me, who would wear what they want, with the one sole purpose of making themselves happy. I firmly believe in surrounding yourself with things that bring you joy. If being thick and bold does it for you, then come stand behind these. One of a kind, genuine geek hornrims, not too big, not too small. just the right size. These are vintage 1960's frames, in excellent, unused condition. Clean, heavy duty, 7 barrel hinges. In perfect working order. Frames are ready for your prescription. No lenses. Straightened and ready to try on. (that is not a scratch in the end of the earpiece, just a reflection) Aprox. Opthalmic measurements as follows: Frames measure 5" across, tip to tip ( about 127mm). Bridge DBL (distance between lenses) is 23mm. Distance between the bridge space is about 14mm. Measurements taken across the center of the frame. Lens width is aprox. (1 5/8") 42mm. Lens height is aprox. (1 1/16") 28mm. Inside hinge to hinge is 4 3/4" (122mm). Temple length is (5 1/2") 140mm, from hinge to end including ear bend. Pupil to pupil distance is (2 1/2") 65mm. Generally, full square specs look good on oval, long faces, like mine. I'm the gal in the photo. Though, I think these would look fine on a slightly rounder face. Narrower, rectangular specs look best on rounder faces. Please make sure your optician will happily fill your prescription, with frames you walk in with. I guarantee that my frames are optical quality. Experienced, seasoned opticians will know how to fill and adjust these frames properly. Online lens replacement labs are generally cheaper than brick and mortar eyeglass chain stores when it comes to filling your prescription. Kindly read my eyewear guide, under my shop policies, or follow this link. http://www.etsy.com/shop/BackThennishVintage/policy These frames are great quality, and feel good in your hands, comfortable, and are higher end acetates, that any optican would love to fill with a sunglass prescription, or your clear, everyday prescription. These would likely sell for about $300 in a high end optical shop. Comes with a protective case. REMEMBER~ Measure your own frames, and compare to my measurements for a sure fit, cause not all heads/eyeglasses are the same size :-)) I realize the difficulty of buying eyewear online. I am happy to model any pair, and give you some guidance. My vintage eyewear is returnable within 7 days of receipt. Your Homework assignment is: Ask for photographs of me wearing them, (if necessary). Please measure a pair of your own frames, to see if these will fit you, as not all heads are the same size. Print out this listing, and make sure your optician will put lenses into frames that you walk into their establishment with. Many are not taking kindly to this, as they will tell you just about anything, to get you to buy their own frames. If they tell you that they cannot do it, take these babes elsewhere, or send them to an online optical lab. Many online places will happily do it for less. I have a second business on the internet, selling reading glasses, and eyeglass frames, for 10 years, and I have heard it all, seen it all. Kindly read my store policies, as there may be information there, that pertains to your order. Domestic shipping includes delivery confirmation. International buyers welcome.... convo me for a shipping quote to your country.

Once the responses have been received, we will review your answers and let you know if we need any clarification. 4. The research phase then begins. Often, other art mediums are implemented like india ink, watercolor, charcoal but it depends entirely on the project. Other times, illustrations and typography are built digitally first, depending on the needs of each individual client. 6. Once the design process has reach a point where the client's review is necessary, the design(s) will arrive in your email inbox with notes or questions regarding the design components. 7. You will review and make suggestions for improvement. 8. 3 rounds of revisions are included. What happens if 3 revisions are applied and the design still needs a few tweaks? No problem. Each additional revision is a flat rate of $35. 9. Once the design receives client approval, all of the final files will be submitted to you via email with instructions. _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ FEEDBACK FROM HAPPY JACK AND MOLLY CLIENTS Working with Meredith was an absolute pleasure! It is such a refreshing and satisfying experience to work with someone who is not only a talented and skilled graphic designer, but who is able to communicate clearly, work quickly, and meet deadlines. Meredith listened to my ideas and then brought them to fruition and I couldn't be more pleased with the results. If you are looking for a designer who is organized, professional and skilled, I recommend her whole-heartedly! -Michele LoBosco, Author and Academic Coach Meredith is a true artist of her craft. Her professionalism and ability to understand individual and business needs made everything come together seamlessly. Her design encapsulated everything I imaged but could not articulate. Simply magnificent. -Vee Insixiengmay, Owner of Sentient Skin Salon I recently worked with Meredith to re-brand my business logo. Meredith's questionnaire was very in-depth and a good starting point for the initial designs. I cannot say I was the easiest client for her, as partly through the design process I asked her to take the designs in a completely new direction, but she was always very patient and receptive to my feedback. I am beyond pleased with the outcome of our collaborative effort and cannot recommend her highly enough! -Chelle Amaral, Owner of Mello Rose Photography

Photographic artists and students of alternative process photography will welcome this new edition of Christopher James' The Book of Alternative Photographic Processes. This significantly expanded edition is a full-color, lavishly illustrated, comprehensive resource that explores every aspect of alternative process image making. With his highly conversational writing style, James explores the techniques, processes, idiosyncrasies, history, and cultural connections that are such a significant part of the genre. Best of all, James makes it extremely accessible, providing clear instructions and practical workflow advice. The book delves into a vast menu of alternative and traditional options, among them: calotype, salted paper, cyanotype, argyrotype, chrysotype, POP, kallitype, ambrotype/wet collodion, Van Dyke, platinum/palladium, Ziatype, gelatin dry plate emulsions, carbon, gum bichromate, albumen, hand-applied emulsions, paper, alternative imaging systems, and digital negative production for alternative process image making. This book has become the unanimous standard reference text for alternative process photography, one that students love to read and work from. Not only does this definitive work make the most complex ideas easy to understand, it is conversational, comfortable, inspirational, and fun to read- a tremendous resource and a treasure trove of alternative process images. "The first edition was a stunning achievement, and one I felt that was not likely to be superceded. Five short years later Christopher James has created a very new work and a new standard. The Book of Alternative Photographic Processes: 2nd Edition is, by far, the best alternative photographic process book ever!" - Richard Sullivan, Founder and Co-Owner, Bostick & Sullivan "If I could only have one photography book this would be it." -Timothy Whelan, Photographic Books

Bonny Pierce Lhotka (Author)

Digital Printing

In The Last Layer–the follow-up to Digital Alchemy, her successful book on alternative printmaking techniques–Bonny Lhotka teaches how to make prints that take their inspiration from early printmaking processes. In this book, Lhotka shows readers step-by-step how to create modern-day versions of anthotypes, cyanotypes, tintypes, and daguerreotypes as well as platinum and carbon prints. She also reinvents the photogravure and Polaroid transfer processes and explores and explains groundbreaking techniques for combining digital images with traditional monotype, collograph, and etching press prints. By applying these classic techniques to modern images, readers will be able to recreate the look of historical printmaking techniques and explore the limits of their creative voice. Best of all, the only equipment required is a desktop inkjet printer that uses pigment inks, and a handful of readily available materials and supplies–not the toxic chemicals once required to perform these very same processes.

Leveraging her training as a traditional painter and printmaker, Bonny Lhotka brings new innovations and inventions that combine the best of centuries of printmaking technique with modern technology to create unique works of art and photography. Artist: Drew Darcy Title: Blush Image Size: 30" x 36" Edition: Artist Hand Signed and Numbered Limited Edition Medium: Canvas Board About the Artist: History and Background Born in Shrewsbury in 1976 I am the eldest of twin boys. Being the son of a doctor and a nurse, I always felt in safe hands right from the start. My artistic flare may well have been passed down from my mother's side. She was one of a family of ten children. Music and art was a central part of growing up in Dublin. My grandfather was from five generations of tailors and trained in Saville Row to become a bespoke tailor. He had three shops in Ireland, one of which was in historical Kilmainham, Dublin. On my father s side, my grandfather was an industrial designer and skilled draughtsman. Thus the fabric of the artist was woven! I can remember drawing from an early age, and was first introduced to oil painting at Stonyhurst College, Lancashire. I revelled in the fact that I could make my indelible mark on my own canvas, just like the great painters before me. Hundreds of hours were spent in the Art Room , where I learnt many of the techniques I use today. I was given a great freedom in my art classes and achieved grade A's in GCSE and A-level Art & Design. Moving to Birmingham, I successfully completed a BTEC National Diploma in Art & Design at Bourneville Art College. In the time waiting for the paint to dry, I found that music and song writing was another creative output for me. I formed a guitar band and spent a few years performing all over the UK and Ireland. Music is still an abiding passion of mine. However I found myself continually drawn back to the canvas, and in 2002 I threw myself into my art and dedicated all my time into developing my own unique style that I hope will eventually lead me to stand out from the current leading artists of the world. After successfully exhibiting and selling my work in some carefully chosen galleries around the country, I later had the opportunity to show five new pieces at the Autumn Fair in Birmingham 2004. This was my opportunity to get a first hand reaction from art collectors, galleries and many of the larger publishing houses. I was overwhelmed with such a great response to my work and this was a huge boost to my confidence. After meeting Glyn Washington and his team, I felt that Washington Green were the right company to launch me onto the main stage. Enjoy! Ideas and Inspirations Music, fashion, modern design, film, photography, advertising, and my ever-changing moods are some of the many subjects that can spark off my creative process. I admire many artists like Gerhard Richter, Francis Bacon, and Edward Hopper to name but a few. I like to take in artistic flavours from my favourite artists, absorb them and throw them all back in to the mix to make my own distinctive style. Many hours are spent gathering photographs and other sources of reference. My work is mainly figurative and I like to capture moments in time, whilst still trying to keep a sense of movement and realism. Once I have enough to work with I can manipulate images using my computer and can quickly realise my initial ideas on screen. I can then get a feel of what the final piece will look like, change colours, cut and paste. I embrace technology and love the fact that I can marry traditional methods with the modern and new. However, nothing compares with the magic that can be created with a brush stroke. No digital imagery or computer power can get even close to that invaluable human touch. I eagerly anticipate transposing the developed ideas onto canvas. From Palette to Picture The first touch of paint on a primed canvas is always the most rewarding. I try to keep as much of those first layers as possible, why fix something that isn t broken. I think this is my secret to keeping a fresh look to my work. The paint is applied with brushes only and I use little or no paint thinners. The consistency of the oil paint straight from the tube works perfectly for me. I m not afraid of using space within my paintings; less can mean more, allowing the painting to invite the mind to imagine. The contrast with colours, textures, light and shade are some of the many elements that continually fascinate me. A Day In The life of I start the day by flooding my house with as much daylight as possible. I work from home having transformed a spare room into a small studio. It is simple, clean, and modern - reflecting my artistic style. White walls surround me to reflect light; there is a chair, desk, easel, guitar and a computer in one corner. Depending on my creative mood I may develop new projects or lose myself in brushwork and canvas. Music is never far away. It is a constant friend and companion to soothe away the hours. Some evenings may be spent socialising, dining out, band rehearsals or you may just find me back in my studio immersing myself in my work.
